Chapter Sixteen
Ella gulped as her insides turned into a pinball machine and she got the shakes. âMarsh, thatâs not an adventure. Thatâs a disaster in the making.â
He pressed a hand to his chest. âYou wound me, madam. I have it on good authority that Iâm a fairly decent partner.â
Darn him, now she was tingling. âThatâs not the point! Sex would wreck everything.â
âWhy assume that? Why couldnât we dive into it like any other physical activity and come out smiling?â
âBecause itâs not like any other physical activity and you know it.â
âOkay, Iâll agree with you that weâve never tried a sport where weâre naked, but thatâs part of the adventure, part of the challenge.â
âYouâre insane.â She couldnât stop quivering. Was it from stress or excitement? Couldnât tell the difference. Especially when he stood so close she could see the little gold flecks in his brown eyes. And the tempting shape of his mouth.
âHear me out. Itâs made to order for our current situation. Weâre temporarily living together. Nobody has to know what weâre up to.â
A secret liaison. Her breath hitched. âYou think they wouldnât guess?â
âNot if we play it cool when weâre with the family. I know you have a game face. Use it.â
The clandestine nature of his suggestion appealed to her. He knew which buttons to push. But she would resist. Had to, for both their sakes. âThereâs no good reason to take such a reckless chance with our friendship.â
âI can think of two.â He held up one finger. âI want you.â He put up a second finger. âAnd you want me.â
âYouâre making a big assumption on that second part, buster.â
âAm not. I know you better than almost anyone does. You want me bad.â
He was right. She began to panic. âLook, Marsh. Weâve kept that promise we made to each other forââ
âTime to break it.â
âJust like that?â She stepped back, dislodging his grip. âAfter twenty years?â
âYou just made my point. The timing is perfect. If weâd tried this when we were younger, we wouldnât have had the maturity to handle it. Weâd let messy emotions get in the way.â
âAre you saying you could have sex with me just for the fun of it?â
âYes. Iâll have more fun sex with you than Iâve ever had with anyone because I know you so well. Weâve been preparing for this adventure for years.â
As her resistance ebbed, she took another step back. âStop talking like this. Weâre best friends. Best friends! Iâm not endangering that special relationship for some silly old sex.â
He smiled. âNow youâre getting the idea. Weâll have silly sex, but it wonât be old. Itâll be totally new, something weâve never experienced together.â
âWhat we have is a bone-deep loyalty that will last forever.â She glared at him. âUnless you ruin it.â
âWe wonât ruin it. Weâll enhance it, add a new level of understanding. Let me be clear. Iâm not suggesting we have a romantic relationship. Weâll be exploring our sexual selves within the safe confines of a deep and abiding friendship. What could be better?â
âMaintaining our current celibate status.
